Valley View : Pubs, Restaurants, Food, Drink

We spent a wonderful Saturday afernoon in January 2019 celebrating a friends birthday at The George.  As always the food was superb, the wine excellent and service top notch. Graham is always welcoming and we highly recommend holiday cottage bookings for large groups in either the main pub, the Coach House at the rear or for very large groups the dining room in the picture.  Advance booking is essential.  You can walk from Valley View holiday cottage in about 15-20 mins (it is steep on the way up).  Private party room for hire at The George, Alstonefield

The Greenman, Ashbourne Refurbished in 2018, we visited this pub in January 2019 for a three-course evening meal.  We were led there by fabulous reviews in Derbyshire Life and we were not disappointed.  The pub, an old coaching inn with considerable history, has been stylishly and carefully modernised and there's an open plan style feel with the kitchen opened up too.  The staff are very friendly and service is exceptional.  Choose from a variey of gins, beers and wines.  Our food included the best fish and chips we have ever had, a devine pate and game pie and everything of course is homemade.

The Greenman, Ashbourne The Greenman is welcoming to large groups and we suggest parking in the marketplace or car park behind the Co-op and going along to enjoy a meal here for a special celebration or family gathering.

The Greenman, Ashbourne If you are popping in to Ashbourne for a shopping trip and want a lighter meal at lunch they have bar snacks and a separate bar area too.

This pub is situated just off the Tissington Trail, so it is ideal to combine a traffic free walk or cycle from Valley View holiday cottage.  If you don't want to start right from the holiday cottage there is a parking point on the Tissington Trail about 5-10 mins drive away.  The walk will take about one hour and a half from the Tissington Trail, quicker for fast paced walkers, but with young ones possibly longer.  It is pretty flat most of the way.  Cycling of course is much faster!

And so to the pub, which is spacious and there is really plenty of space for groups.  Very dog friendly too.  Candles and log fire create a relaxing ambience.  If you prefer to drive there is a huge car park so no problem with parking.

A good quality menu, in particular the burgers and probably the best cappuccino we have ever had! A good range for vegetarians.  We revisited in January 2019 and enjoyed great food and beers.  Some favourites were courgette chips, avacado salad and a mushroom, red pepper and feta sandwich.  Good range of drinks and ale including craft beers.  The pub doesn't take bookings but it is pretty large and we've always got a table.

There is plenty of parking space.

The pub is now completely refurbished.  The decor looks great, but still keeps the older charm and the outside areas front and back have really been improved.  The whole pub now appears to be dog friendly (apart from the large room at the back).  We visited in January 2021 and had a very good meal, there is the lovely large room at the back for large groups but we do advise booking.

Hartington is within walking distance of Valley View holiday cottage and it is a lovely walk north along the River Dove about two hours each way.  Hartington is a lovely village to visit and it has a cheese shop also selling local beers and English wines, with its situation overlooking the duck pond.  There is The Village Stores, which is a shop cum deli with coffee that you can enjoy on their outdoor terrace.  The Village Stores also makes fresh sandwiches to take away so it is a handy point to break a longer walk. There is plenty of parking in the centre of the village if you want to visit by car and stroll around.

Situated two miles north of Ashbourne on the main Ashbourne to Buxton Road and approximately 10 minutes by car from Milldale, this pub is well worth a visit.  A refurbished 17th century pub with real ales and good value home cooked bar food.  We would thoroughly recommend a visit and we now recommend this pub for group and family bookings.  A friend checked it out for us in January 2019 and the beer, ambience and food was enjoyed.
