Ashbourne is a picturesque market town, 8 miles south of Milldale and well worth a trip. The cobbled market place, hidden alleys and yards are all worth exploring. Market days are Thursday and Saturday. Ashbourne has four banks, numerous shops, many small tea rooms, restaurants and gift shops.

The town itself has many historic buildings, one of the oldest being the 12th/13th century church of St Oswald’s.
There is also a Waitrose, M&S foodstore, co-op and leisure centre with swimming pool.
Some of the annual events in Ashbourne include the Ashbourne Arts Festival in June and July with various music and arts events over a 2 week period throughout the town. Every year Ashbourne is host to one of the largest highland gatherings outside of Scotland. Pipe band competitions, highland dancing and highland sports are just some of the events happening in August. Also in August is the Ashbourne Agricultural Show with entertainment and interest for all the family. There are classes for cattle, sheep, goats, horses as well as a dog show, trade stands, craft marquee and food hall.
If you enjoy stately homes, you are in for a treat with Chatsworth, Sudbury Hall, Hardwick Hall, Kedleston Hall, Tissington Hall just to name a few within easy drive from Ashbourne.
